Will lifting weights make me bulky? What strength training does for women
It is the question we hear most. The short answer is no, and the longer answer explains what lifting does do for you, in the gym and outside it.

If you have ever worried that picking up a barbell will turn you into a bodybuilder overnight, you are not alone. It is the question we are asked more than any other. Here is the honest answer.
The short answer: no
Building a lot of muscle takes years of very specific training and eating, on purpose. The women you see on a bodybuilding stage have worked towards that look for a long time, with a plan designed to get them there. It does not happen by accident from a few strength sessions a week.
What most women notice instead is that they look and feel firmer, stand taller and find everyday things easier.
What strength training does do
Everyday life gets easier
Carrying the shopping, lifting a child, getting up off the floor, moving furniture. Strength training practises the movements behind all of these, so they stop feeling like hard work.
It looks after your body as you get older
Muscle and bone strength naturally drop as we age. Lifting weights is one of the best-known ways to slow that down, which is one reason it suits women of every age, not just people in their twenties.
Confidence
This is the one our members talk about most. There is something about lifting a weight you could not lift a month ago that changes how you see yourself. That feeling does not stay in the gym.
Progress you can measure
So much of fitness is about what the scales say. Strength gives you something better to watch: the numbers going up on the bar. It is a far kinder way to see your progress.
What about cardio?
Cardio is good for your heart and your mood, and there is room for it. But many women spend years doing only cardio and wonder why they do not feel stronger. Adding strength training is often the missing piece.
Will I get bigger at all?
Your muscles will get a little stronger and firmer, and that is the point. How your body changes overall depends on lots of things, including what you eat, how you sleep and your own body. That is why our coaching looks at your relationship with food and your wellbeing as well as your training. You can read more about that on our personal coaching page.
Start light, learn well
The best way to put the worry to bed is to try it, with a coach who starts you at the right weight and builds up from there. That is exactly what we do in our Ladies That Lift small group sessions.
