Why train in a women-only gym? What changes when the room is on your side

Lots of women feel uncomfortable in a busy mixed gym. Here is what is different about training in a women-only space, and who it suits.

2 min read

Ask a room full of women about the gym and you will hear the same stories. Feeling watched in the weights area. Not knowing how to use the equipment and not wanting to ask. Waiting for the corner of the room to be free so you can practise without an audience. For lots of women, that is enough to stop them going at all.

A women-only gym takes that away. Here is what changes.

You can learn without feeling watched

Learning to lift means getting things a bit wrong at first. That is how everyone learns. It is much easier to try something new, ask a question or laugh at a wobbly first attempt when you feel comfortable in the room.

One of our members summed it up in a review as a comfortable place to learn to lift weights safely. That comfort is what lets you progress.

Every age and body type belongs

In a women-only studio you train alongside women at every stage of life, with all sorts of goals: getting stronger for everyday life, feeling more confident, coming back after a break, or training for a competition. Nobody fits a mould, and nobody needs to.

Coaching that understands you

Women's lives bring their own things to work around: busy family weeks, energy that changes through the month, a complicated history with food or with exercise. A female-led gym is used to all of it. Training is planned around real life, not the other way round.

A community, not just a membership

The biggest difference is the people. Training in a small group of women who know your name, cheer your progress and notice when you are missing is a powerful reason to keep showing up. Strength comes from consistency, and consistency is much easier with people in your corner.

You can read what some of our members say about it on our community page.

Is it for you?

A women-only gym suits you if:

  • you have felt uncomfortable or out of place in a mixed gym;
  • you want to learn to lift properly, with coaching, from the start;
  • you would like to train with other women who will encourage you;
  • you want help with food, confidence and wellbeing as well as training.

If that sounds like you, the best way to find out is to come and see us. Our studio in Upper Wortley is women-only and led by a female coach, Marni.
